7, yes... but...
I'm a fan of Windows 7, since it seems to be a big improvement over Vista, and is what Microsoft should have released in the first place. I feel that it does a much better job of getting out of the way, which is not something MS is famous for. Having said that, I've played with it, enjoyed it, but find myself spending most of my time using my Debian boxes, one with an actual Debian server, the other with both Debian testing and Ubuntu installed. I generally use Debian, but do enjoy an occasional foray in the the South African savanna...
Debian has been my tried and true friend through many years of experimentation with Linux, and has, for the most part, been quite dependable. However, Ubuntu has a great deal going for it, especially in the user interface department.
Recently I have seen Debian improving in that regard. Their website was recently revamped, and they have many more themes and graphic goodies than in their dark past. Not that that's the be all, end all, but it is nice to boot to something attractive.
Anyway, just some random thoughts about my recent junkets in LinuxLand.

Logitech MarbleMouse usage on Debian Squeeze

MarbleMouse usage is frustrating on Debian (and Linux in general?), but I found a file that, when added to /etc/hal/fdi/policy enables scrolling using the small left button. This works on my install of Squeeze (64 bit). I called it MarbleMouse.fdi, if that matters. It seems not to enable 3d scrolling, but rather just the up/down scroll feature.

30Boxes!
30boxes.com is quite a find for an online calendar. I think this will work for my small office environment, which has 7 workstations, 8 employees, lots of appointments out of the office, with scheduling necessary all the time. Updates are almost immediate, and this calendar is simple to use while still having a ton of nice features. You owe yourself a look at 30boxes.com.

Logitech Marble Mouse On Ubuntu 9.04

Upgrading to Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope (9.04) disabled the scrollwheel effect on my Logitech Marble Mouse USB, so I set out to find a cure. Here it is. Add the following file, "/etc/hal/fdi/policy/mouse-wheel.fdi" (perhaps any title would do... I picked that one at random) consisting of the following text, then reboot. Of course, the formatting is hideous below, and all the line feeds need to be removed, but I can't figure out how to show this code snippet without formatting except in a textarea! (damn)

Liam improvements
Well, it's been a while since we had Liam, the Grandchild, over for the entire night. He seems to have improved immeasurably since the last time. His fussiness has vanished, he cried only after bonking his big head on the floor while attempting to crawl. He's quite close to crawling, which will create a whole new set of problems. Anyway, he slurped down his bottle after his bath, and went straight to sleep, and slept all night. This morning he woke around 7:30, just quietly babbling away in the crib, and after a while I got him up, changed him, we played a bit, then Gramma held him while he slurped down about half a bottle, and now he's napping. As I said, much improved over the last time.
Hopefully it's a trend.....

iBook G4 hard drive workaround
I have an iBook g4, a few years old, which has a failing hard drive. I attempted to install Linux on it using several partitions, boot,usr,etc., but found a tremendous amount of errors on the fourth partition. I decided to go back to OSX, and installed it on the fifth partition, bypassing the apparent broken segments. The iBook seems fully functional, but with only about 30 gigs of hard drive space to use. At least it works... beats paying a load of bucks to have a new drive installed... yes?

Wm. Update
Well, we, the grandparents on the father's side, I being the father's father, had young William overnight for the first time on Friday, and it was a pleasure, although somewhat trying. The baby is quite fussy, perhaps with colic, (confirmed by the Great-Grandmother, Harriet) and cried some of the time, once without mercy. However, he ate well, and slept some of the night once he settled down. Darsa got one feeding at 2am and I was up at 5 for another. Also I had the rare reminder of changing a poopy diaper, something about which I had entirely forgotten the true pleasure. Ha!
Looking forward to the next visit with trepidation.... haha.

Still on hold
Waiting, waiting, waiting..... This is not what I expected, having to wait and wait to see the Grandson, but the circumstances dictate that we have patience. William is making progress, but what can you ask of someone who was thrust into the world over a month sooner than expected, with systems that were not yet fully developed.
So, patience is exercised by all concerned.

Grand Father? Me?
Seems the young Liam (?) [I might prefer William, Willy, Bill, Will, or Steve] must stay in the hospital for another week, since he seems unable to drink from a bottle. [Might prefer boobies, not sure.] [I know I would!]
It's quite an amazing feeling to hold your Grandson in your large and clumsy hands, feeling you might drop or squash him at any moment. So tiny, so new.
To Auntie M, may I say "Hello!" glad I was able to hear your voice, sorry we couldn't chat for a bit, but I didn't want to mess with Craig's cell phone charges.
May I also say I don't feel like a Grandfather... in fact, I feel like I am too "something" to be a grandfather [old, young, crazy, insecure, confused, reserved, whatever] Maybe a great grandfather or great uncle or ??? would be more appropriate. Might it be time to grow up?
I may have more in common with the Great Grandmother than any other family member, except possibly Auntie M, although I doubt she (either she) would see things in that light.

The first Grandson was born on 7/12/08. William "Liam" Kai Moffat, At just over 7 pounds, could be considered large considering he was over a month early to arrive in this world.

This is the new blog at blogspot.com, which may not survive or ever be viewed, but who cares, it's fun just to be on the web, even in a small way.
